Who is the partner?

Kalevala is a Sami village in the Karkonosze Mountains. It is located in the highest village in Karkonosze Mountains – Borowice. The originators of this place are Magda and Michal Makowski, who put a lot of heart into what they do. Up to their ears in love with Finland, they bring a lot of interesting ideas to their little enclave. From Kauppatori (a form of market where you can buy local organic farm products every week), to a school where children are taught in the world-famous Finnish school system.

What was the problem we had to solve?

Capturing what Kalevala really is was quite a challenge. However, it is a partner we chose ourselves. In 2018, while visiting our beloved Przesieka once again, we showed up at Kalevala unannounced. We felt the place and the owners from the first contact. Carefree huskies running around the village, traditional Sami tents, reindeer and some beautiful saunas – that’s our aesthetics. We offered to make a film for Kalevala. Magda and Michal, didn’t have to be convinced for long. Apart from the weather conditions and the snow, which did not want to visit the Karkonosze exceptionally in winter, not much surprised us.

How did we solve this problem?

A well-written script with room for a little improvisation, Jon Henrik Fjällgren’s brilliant music and great editing made this film. We also know that there is an unexplainable particle in it that makes every screening special for us and many viewers. Is it our understanding of the place? To this day we don’t know, and it doesn’t really matter to us. The realization that we are sometimes capable of such sorcery is heartening.

What is the result of this for the Kalevala?

Kalevala has gained even more recognition. The film made its way to the pavilion at EXPO 2020 in Dubai, where it represented Poland. More than 1.5 million people have seen the film on social media, and every visitor to Kalevala in Borowice has the screening included in part of their tour. Since then, we have been working non-stop with Kalevala, making more videos that showcase Magda and Michal’s next unconventional ideas. They also organize the Kalevala Spirit Festival, where Igor Falecki, Ralph Kaminski & My Best Band In The World, and Apocalyptica have already performed. This shows that Kalevala is not only an interesting place to spend leisure time, but more importantly, big dreams that find their way into reality.
